An orthopedic implant is a medical device surgically placed into the body to replace a missing joint or bone or to support a damaged bone. The orthopedic implants can be categorized by their type of material and the type of tissue it will replace. Generally, they are made of alloys that are steel (iron-based), titanium - based, or cobalt-based. Further, these implants can be placed under two groups: permanent replacement of joints and temporary replacement. Permanent orthopedic implants are the implants for the hips, knees, ankles, shoulders, wrists and joints of the fingers, whereas plates, screws, pins, wires etc. are temporary implants.

Orthopedic implants are made from various materials, including metals (titanium and stainless steel), polymers, and ceramics, and are designed to mimic the function and structure of the body's natural bones, joints, and other tissues. Orthopedic implants can further be classified into following types:

Joint replacement implants: These orthopedic implants are used to replace damaged or diseased joints, such as knees, hips, and shoulders.

Fixation implants: Bone fixation implants are used to stabilize fractured bones and promote healing.

Spinal implants: Spinal implants treats or fixes spinal disorders and injuries, including herniated discs, scoliosis, and spinal fractures.

Dental implants: These are used to replace missing teeth and restore oral function.

Trauma implants: Trauma implants repair or reconstruct bones and joints that have been damaged due to accidents or other trauma.
